Prof. Dr. Paul L. G. Vlek

Dr. Paul L.G. Vlek, emeritus professor at the University of Bonn since 2015, was the founding Executive Director of the West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) from 2010 till 2014, and Director/Professor for Ecology and Natural Resources Management, Center for Development Research (ZEF) at the University of Bonn (1998 -2015). Trained as a Tropical Soil Scientist at the University of Wageningen in the Netherlands and Colorado State University in the USA, he conducted research on the sustainable use of natural resources in the tropics and how this is affected by or affects development processes. Prior to his retirement Prof. Vlek also served as professor of Tropical Agronomy at the University of Goettingen (1990-1998) and founding director of the International Center for Soil Fertility Research in Togo (1987-1990). With over 200 peer- reviewed publications, Dr. Vlek is a fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences of India and the American Society of Agronomy, Soil Science Society of America as well as the Academy of Arts and Sciences of North Rhine -Westphalia, Germany. He was recipient of the GCHERA World Agricultural Prize (2014). He was editor in chief of Nutrient Cycling in Agroecosystems for over 20 years and served on several other editorial boards and national and international committees. His current residence is in Austin, Texas, USA.
